Transform Your Dreams into Decisive Direction

Uncategorized Jan 14, 2021

Jordan Romero was nine years old when he set his sights on accomplishing what many thought a child’s fantasy. Jordan not only made it his goal to be the youngest person ever to climb Mount Everest, he made it his goal to climb each of the Seven Summits of the tallest mountains on all seven continents, all before the age of twenty!

What “Big Dreams” do you have for 2021?

We’ve all read about or heard of “motivation tips” to help us move closer to our health and fitness dreams and goals. This week we wanted to share with you the difference between a “Dream and a Goal”. Our hope is one of these statements may be just what you are looking for to help you reach your desired destination in 2021!

Deciphering Dreams vs Goals:

Our first step is to understand that “dreams” are different from “goals”.

For many of us we were taught, if we wish or hope for something long enough and hard enough, it will become a reality. Most of us confuse dreams and goals and in the process leave ourselves frustrated, stuck and ultimately a statistic of another year gone by. What if our first step to realizing the life we desire was to distinguish the difference between a dream and a goal?

The reality is we need to have both dreams and goals—and you need to understand that there are some subtle and significant differences between the two. For many of us, our own personal experiences and the national statistics are grim reminders this is far from the truth.

Unfortunately, too many of us confuse dreams and goals. We need both, but there’s a big difference between the two.

 What is a dream?

The definition of a dream is, “a cherished aspiration, ambition or ideal.” When we dream we imagine things the way we’d like them to be in the future.

 What is a goal?

A goal is something that you want to achieve that is specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, and timely. In other words...

  • A Dream = a future outcome.
  • A Goal =  a future action.

  • Dreams are wishful ideas.
  • Goals are actionable steps.

  • Dreams are forever.
  • Goals have deadlines.

  • Dreams are ambiguous and imaginary.
  • Goals are tangible, measurable and specific.
    ______________________
  • Dreams are something you hope for.
  • Goals are something that produces results.

  • Dreams are something you think about.
  • Goals are something you do.

  • Dreams are looking at the mountain
  • Goals are taking the mountain.

According to researchers, goals have specific objectives, requiring focus, direction, perseverance and dedication to accomplish. Goal setting is widely accepted as the most effective way of focusing our attention on the right activities, energizing us, and increasing our commitment. (Sheard, 2013)

And yet, unless the goal is well-formulated, the strategy appropriate, and the actions directed, it will lack purpose, relevance, direction, and accountability. (Ogbeiwi, 2017)

Goals are the plan of action that we set to chase our dreams. They are the map and the route that direct our steps.

Bottom line: Dreams can inspire you, but goals can change your life.

The first step is not just dreaming about your “outcome” and results, it’s also considering the new routines and commitments that will come along with your new adventure.

Sometimes it only takes one simple step to transform a dream into a goal and ultimately change your life.

As you look at your hopes and ambitions for next year, ask yourself, “Am I “dreaming” or am I “goal setting”?
